Clay Hui Hawaiʻi is a community gathering for ceramic artists, educators, and clay enthusiasts to connect, learn, and share. Inspired by the spirit of hui — coming together for a shared purpose — we welcome everyone who works with clay, from students and teachers to professional artists and studio potters.
Strengthen relationships among Hawaiʻi’s clay artists and educators.
Encourage open exchange of knowledge, ideas, and creative approaches.
Honor and learn from the experiences of artists rooted in Hawaiʻi.
Create an inclusive, supportive space for connection and inspiration.
Aloha – approach with respect, care, and generosity.
Learning – share freely and remain curious.
Connection – build bridges between artists, teachers, and students.
Community – nurture the clay ʻohana through shared experience.
To cultivate a vibrant and interconnected clay community in Hawaiʻi — one that celebrates creativity, conversation, collaboration, and the joy of making with clay.
Clay Hui Hawaiʻi is inspired by (modeled after) the Tacoma Pottery Salon. The Tacoma Pottery Salon is a deliberate effort to distribute knowledge and build community in Washington. Upon returning to Hawaiʻi, Jennifer wanted to facilitate that same kind of forum for our local clay community.
Jennifer Fujimoto creates playful, expressive work inspired by Japanese folk art and her mixed-race heritage. Drawing on her background in graphic design, she brings bold color, clean linework, and a love of storytelling to her functional ceramics. Jennifer has been working with clay since 2015 and recently moved from Seattle, WA, back home to the island of Oahu. Her workshops and classes are all about joy, creativity, and making space for personal expression.
Susan Hanes is a ceramic artist and owner of Hawaii Ceramic Supply and Nendo Studio Hawaii. Her specialty is cute and whimsical pieces with inspiration from her Japanese heritage and nature. Many of her pieces have a more "natural" or naked clay finish with minimal glaze. She loves the interplay of the naked clay with the fluidity of the glaze. She also specializes in raku, both the Japanese as well as American style raku. She loves the interaction of the different elements and testing limits on creation.
Do you have an idea for a gathering? Are you interested in sharing pieces from your collection or want to present on a specific (clay related) topic? Curious about how you can get involved? Please reach out to us at clayhuihawaii@gmail.com and let us know. We'd love to hear from you!
